Plot & Premise The Christmas movie filmed in Door County is called 'A Wisconsin Christmas Pie' In A Wisconsin Christmas Pie, pastry chef Emma Parker (played by Katie Leclerc) returns from Chicago to her family’s cherry orchard in Door County for the holidays. She discovers the orchard is on the brink of being sold to developers. Persuaded to enter the town’s holiday pie bake-off, Emma reconnects with her high school sweetheart, Mitch (Ryan Carnes). Together, they realize that the true recipe for saving the orchard — and their hearts — might just be love. Filming Locations Across Door County The Christmas movie filmed in Door County includes the Christmaskindlmarkt in Sister Bay Because the film is deeply rooted in Door County’s landscape and community spirit, much of the production took place right here on the peninsula. Some hotels charge extra fees, while others include free parking. Kitchen facilities in suites help reduce dining costs. Look for properties with mini-fridges or full kitchenettes. Seasonal Price Fluctuations Summer rates can be 50-80% higher than winter prices. July and August command the highest premiums near Peninsula State Park. Fall foliage season (late September to mid-October) brings the second-highest rates of the year. Peak color weekends cost the most. Holiday weekends throughout the year increase prices significantly. Part of a historic district that includes galleries and an ice house—testimony to village life across centuries. Restoration efforts by the Ephraim Foundation reflect the community’s commitment to heritage . Visiting Anderson Dock is stepping into living history where art, maritime culture, and local tradition converge. Cancellation & Refund Policies Expect 24–48 hour cancellation windows off-season, and 7–14 days during summer/fall peaks. Late cancellations often forfeit one night’s rate. Always read the fine print and consider travel insurance for high-season trips. Transportation & Parking You’ll want a car—Door County lacks public transit. Parking is generally free at motels and in most town centers. State parks charge $11/day or $39/year (WI resident rate). Summer traffic slows through Fish Creek and Ephraim mid-day; pad your schedule 10–15 minutes. Conclusion Door County’s best motel stays are independent, story-rich, and close to the action. Fresh Coast Motel (Fish Creek) and Spruce and Shore Motel (Fish Creek) deliver the comfort, character, and local know-how you need—without resorting to cookie-cutter chain vibes. Our area offers activities suited for families, couples, and solo travelers looking for relaxation or adventure. You can find fresh ways to spend your summer days by exploring some of the most popular things to do in Door County. Whether you enjoy nature, great food, or local traditions, there is something here that will make your trip memorable. 1. Kayak tour of Cave Point and underwater caves A kayak tour at Cave Point is a great way to see Door County’s natural beauty from the water. Paddling along the Lake Michigan coastline, you can get close to the tall limestone cliffs and watch how waves have shaped them over time. This area is known for its unique underwater caves and clear water. Kayaking lets you look into the caves and see parts of the park that can’t be seen from land. Some caves are only visible from the water, making this one of the best ways to explore the area. Guided tours are a good option, especially if you are new to kayaking. A guide will help you stay safe and give you interesting facts about local geology and wildlife. Calm weather days are best for these tours since waves can make paddling and exploring caves difficult. You can join a group through local companies such as Door County Kayak Tours or Peninsula Kayak Company. Most tours provide everything you need, like kayaks, paddles, and life jackets. Seeing Cave Point from a kayak is different than seeing it from a trail. The views—water splashing against rocks, the open lake, and sometimes even ducks or fish—are peaceful and memorable. This activity works well for families, couples, and anyone who enjoys being on the water. 2. Swim at Fish Creek Public Beach Image source: Visit Fish Creek If you enjoy swimming, Fish Creek Public Beach offers a comfortable and inviting spot directly across the street from Fresh Coast Motel. You’ll also find a viewing dock that gives a nice look out over the bay. Bathrooms and a bathhouse are located nearby, which helps make your visit more comfortable. Fresh Coast Motel has been newly renovated in 2024 and is formerly known as By the Bay Motel. ### Contactless Motel Opening in Fish Creek Fresh Coast Motel As Featured in Door County Pulse By Debra Fitzgerald, Peninsula Pulse – January 11th, 2024 A new contactless, boutique motel – the first of its kind in Door County – will open for the 2024 season in the heart of downtown Fish Creek.  (From left) Mitch Ehly, Katie Wanzer, Luke Nelsen and Katie Nelsen are opening the contactless, boutique Fresh Coast Motel, this season in the former By-the-Bay Motel in Fish Creek. Submitted. Katie Wanzer and Mitch Ehly partnered in September with their West Bend, Wisconsin neighbors, Luke and Katie Nelsen, to purchase the By-the-Bay Motel from John and Mary Koehler. Located across from Fish Creek Public Beach and two doors down from the Blue Horse Cafe, the motel will be called Fresh Coast Motel.  “We had been looking for places in Door County,” Katie Wanzer said. “We love it and grew up going there. When By-the-Bay came up, it was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” The Koehlers lived in a house on the property that the new owners have stripped to the studs and will rebuild into a five-bedroom, four-bath luxury vacation rental called “The Deck House” after the property’s two decks. Adjacent to the house, the two motel properties house 15 rooms total – the back building has eight double-queen rooms, the front building seven king rooms. Eleven of the rooms have water views.  The former home on the property was stripped to the studs and is being rebuilt into a five-bedroom, four-bath luxury vacation rental. Submitted. All of the motel rooms have been gutted down to the 1970s wallpaper. Outside, a front patio will feature a fire pit, lights and outdoor furniture.  The new, contactless business model means keypads and codes delivered via email and text messages will replace the need for a front-desk to check guests in or out, giving guests the freedom of arriving whenever it works for their schedule. “It’s really just going to be a seamless, contact-less experience,” Katie Wanzer said. “It’s moving with the modern experience, especially after COVID when everything went digital. We’re really excited to bring that to Door County.” Cleaning staff will be locally employed, as are all the contractors doing the renovations, and the banker financing their venture.  The former By-the-Bay Motel across the street from Fish Creek’s public beach is under new ownership and will reopen as the contactless Fresh Coast Motel this season. Photo by D.A. Fitzgerald. We pride ourselves on being local,” Katie Wanzer said. A motel differs from a hotel in that it has rooms that are entered from the outside, and a “boutique” motel means, generally, a more intimate and fashionable space.  “They [boutique motel rooms] feature a strong artistic sense and focus on design – not every room is the same,” Katie Wanzer said. The Nelsens have ties to Door County. Luke Nelsen worked for Going Garbage for a number of years and the Wanzers own a rental property in Sister Bay, in addition to their company Wisco Hosts – a short-term-rental (STR) company that works with three other rental properties in Door County (and one in Eagle River). The Nelsens, too, are in the hospitality business and own STRs in the Smoky Mountains. Fresh Coast Motel will have a soft opening in April, and open fully the first week in May.
