Unwrapping Sturgeon Bay & Christmas by the Bay WeekendNovember 22 - 24, 2024



One of the Door County happenings and biggest holiday celebration is Unwrapping Sturgeon Bay & Christmas by the Bay in Sturgeon Bay which will be held November 22-24, 2024. The weekend kicks off with a community car parade as Sturgeon Bay 'unwraps' their festive storefronts followed by the annual tree lighting ceremony near the Old Bell Tower on Third Avenue on Friday, November 22.



On Saturday, November 23 the fun continues with a holiday parade at 10 a.m. followed by a meet and greet with Santa at the Door County Historical Museum. The weekend comes to a close during brunch with Santa at Stone Harbor Resort on Sunday, November 24 from 9:30 a.m. to Noon.

Join friends and family in Ellison Bay on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 28) at 9 a.m. for the fourth annual Gobble Wobble Fun Run/Walk. Join this quirky and fun New Year's Day tradition! Entering into its 45th year, there’s an open invitation to virtually anyone to join the Egg Harbor New Year’s Day parade. Dress up, bring your pets, and decorate an old car, motorcycle, or any piece of heavy construction equipment. You’re limited only by ingenuity and practicality. There is no formal registration required. The parade starts at 1 PM  at Stella Maris Parish and runs through the village from Harbor School Road to County Hwy E. Parking is available on Church Street.

On Saturday, enjoy two types of live glassblowing demonstrations from 11 a.m to 3 p.m.  Fish Creek's own Ryan Dayton will be making glass pumpkins and a variety of glass art in the Burnt Bluff hotshop.

Saturday, September 21: Harvest Fest



Join Destination Sturgeon Bay in welcoming the fall season with Sturgeon Bay’s Annual Harvest Fest. Usher in the spirit of autumn with a bountiful day on Third Avenue starting at 8 am. Features include a classic car show, craft show, food booths, in-store specials, the “Tapping of the Firkin”, stein holding contest, and live entertainment. Preview the “Bass Around the Bay” Street Art Project at Martin Park before the virtual auction closes at 5 pm!







October 4 - 6: Fall Lighthouse Festival



The Fall Lighthouse Festival includes air, land-based, boat, and adventure tours that provide access to all 11 of the treasured lighthouses of Door County. Many of the tour excursions are unique to the Lighthouse Festival weekends and provide visitors exclusive access to lighthouses not typically open to the public including Chambers Island, Plum Island, and Sherwood Point Lighthouses. 



There are tours for all levels of activity and accessibility. Some tours involve hiking. Boat tours depart from a variety of locations around the Peninsula, including Fish Creek, Gills Rock, Baileys Harbor, and Sturgeon Bay.

October 12 -13: Pumpkin Patch Festival



One of the top Door County Fall Festivals, Egg Harbor’s Pumpkin Patch Festival, an event that’s brimming with charm and fall-themed fun. This two-day festival features carnival rides, arts and crafts vendors, face painting, live music, and of course, plenty of pumpkins. October 18 - 20: Fall Fest



Door County Fall Festival, Sister Bay's Fall Fest is one of Door County's most anticipated events, drawing thousands of visitors each year. This festival is full of surprises and will give your family a Halloween filled with good memories they’ll remember forever.











October 26: Thrills & Chills



A day of festive Halloween fun for the entire family! The Costume Parade begins at 10 am from the Old Bell Tower and concludes at Martin Park. Activities include make-your-own trick-or-treat bags, costume parade, haunted house, pumpkin carving, and trick-or-treating throughout downtown Sturgeon Bay from 10 am-3 pm.

Afternoon: Explore Peninsula State Park After your orchard visit, make your way to Peninsula State Park, one of Wisconsin’s most popular parks. Don’t miss the iconic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, where you can take a guided tour and learn about the history of the area. Evening: Sunset at Sunset Park As the day winds down, walk over to Sunset Park in Fish Creek (down the road from the Fresh Coast Motel) to witness one of Door County’s famous sunsets. The park offers a serene setting to watch the sun dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the waters of Green Bay. Afterward, treat yourself to a dinner at one of the local restaurants including Bayside Tavern known for their infamous chili or try Hill Street for one of their famous burgers.

Day 2: Culture, Cuisine, and Coastal Views



Morning: Breakfast and Art Galleries Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at one of Door County’s charming cafes. The White Gull Inn in Fish Creek is a classic choice, renowned for its cherry-stuffed French toast and is a two block walk from the motel. Once you’re fueled up, spend the morning exploring the local art scene. Door County is home to numerous galleries and studios, where you can browse works by local artists. Don’t miss the Edgewood Orchard Galleries, set in a rustic barn and surrounded by beautiful sculpture gardens.



Afternoon: Wine Tasting and Coastal Towns No trip to Door County is complete without sampling some of the region’s wines. Head to Stone's Throw Winery in Egg Harbor known for their California blends. Afterward, explore the quaint coastal towns of Ephraim and Sister Bay. Wander through boutique shops like Spot Clothing, and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the goats grazing on the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant.



Evening: Fish Boil Experience For dinner, experience one of Door County’s most unique traditions: the fish boil. This culinary spectacle involves cooking fresh-caught whitefish in a large pot over an open fire, accompanied by potatoes and onions. The boil-over, where the fire flares up dramatically as the fish oils spill over, is a sight to behold. Pelletier's Restaurant and Fish Boil is only a short walk from the motel is a fantastic place to enjoy this classic Door County meal.

Day 3: Relaxation and Reflection



Morning: Breakfast and Coffee Enjoy the crisp fall morning air and grab a coffee and a pastry from The Blue Horse Cafe right next door. This cafe is a local favorite known for its divine selection of organic, fair trade coffees and their wide selection of baked good (they carry gluten free products!) and their breakfast sandwiches. 



Afternoon: Visit to Cave Point County Park Wrap up your weekend with a visit to Cave Point County Park. This lesser-known gem offers dramatic limestone cliffs and sea caves carved by the relentless waves of Lake Michigan. We begin by grabbing a tasty breakfast at a well-known local café to fuel our bodies. Feeling ready, we stretch our legs with a walk down Main Street, browsing in unique shops and local galleries.



The small stores let us see authentic crafts and local talent. After enjoying downtown, our afternoon draws us into Peninsula State Park.



We walk or cycle the trails, soaking in the forest smells and striking lake views. A highlight here is Eagle Tower, offering panoramic vistas that make for excellent photo opportunities.



When the day’s light grows softer, we reward ourselves with dinner at a local restaurant. We might sample seafood, farm-fresh meals, or classic comfort fare.

The Alexander Noble House Museum gives us a sense of how locals lived in the past. The Peninsula School of Art displays creative works from area artists.



Dinner on this day is extra special when we choose a waterfront spot. The views add to our meal, and we might end up on a patio as the sun sets over the harbor.

### Contactless Motel Opening in Fish Creek

Fresh Coast Motel As Featured in Door County Pulse

A new contactless, boutique motel – the first of its kind in Door County – will open for the 2024 season in the heart of downtown Fish Creek.

Katie Wanzer and Mitch Ehly partnered in September with their West Bend, Wisconsin neighbors, Luke and Katie Nelsen, to purchase the By-the-Bay Motel from John and Mary Koehler.



Located across from Fish Creek Public Beach and two doors down from the Blue Horse Cafe, the motel will be called Fresh Coast Motel. 



“We had been looking for places in Door County,” Katie Wanzer said. “We love it and grew up going there. When By-the-Bay came up, it was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”



The Koehlers lived in a house on the property that the new owners have stripped to the studs and will rebuild into a five-bedroom, four-bath luxury vacation rental called “The Deck House” after the property’s two decks. Adjacent to the house, the two motel properties house 15 rooms total – the back building has eight double-queen rooms, the front building seven king rooms. Eleven of the rooms have water views. 



The former home on the property was stripped to the studs and is being rebuilt into a five-bedroom, four-bath luxury vacation rental. Submitted.



All of the motel rooms have been gutted down to the 1970s wallpaper. Outside, a front patio will feature a fire pit, lights and outdoor furniture. 



The new, contactless business model means keypads and codes delivered via email and text messages will replace the need for a front-desk to check guests in or out, giving guests the freedom of arriving whenever it works for their schedule.



“It’s really just going to be a seamless, contact-less experience,” Katie Wanzer said. “It’s moving with the modern experience, especially after COVID when everything went digital. We’re really excited to bring that to Door County.”



Cleaning staff will be locally employed, as are all the contractors doing the renovations, and the banker financing their venture.

We pride ourselves on being local,” Katie Wanzer said.



A motel differs from a hotel in that it has rooms that are entered from the outside, and a “boutique” motel means, generally, a more intimate and fashionable space. 



“They [boutique motel rooms] feature a strong artistic sense and focus on design – not every room is the same,” Katie Wanzer said.



The Nelsens have ties to Door County. Luke Nelsen worked for Going Garbage for a number of years and the Wanzers own a rental property in Sister Bay, in addition to their company Wisco Hosts – a short-term-rental (STR) company that works with three other rental properties in Door County (and one in Eagle River). The Nelsens, too, are in the hospitality business and own STRs in the Smoky Mountains.



Fresh Coast Motel will have a soft opening in April, and open fully the first week in May. Reservations are being accepted now at freshcoastmotel.com.

### Trail Tramper's Delight Trail

Easiest. This trail name originated in the early 1920s when hikers walked from Nicolet Bay to Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. In the hot summer, the shaded path provided a cool walk, which was a trail tramper's delight. Access near Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.

### Eagle Trail

More difficult. Remarkable 150-foot cliffs, springs and forested terraces make Eagle Trail memorable. Several steep, rocky sections offset a level segment that parallels Eagle Harbor.

### Peninsula Bike Trails Double Loop

Experience this 8.4-mile loop trail near Fish Creek, Wisconsin. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 43 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking, mountain biking, and running, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring

### The 2025 Draft

The festivities will include several days of activities throughout Green Bay and will feature the Draft Experience – a massive free football festival – near Lambeau Field to allow fans of all teams to enjoy games, interactive exhibits, player appearances, youth-focused activities, and much more.

The annual Jacksonport Thanksgiving Day Parade is a fun-loving, eclectic parade — a labor of love put in motion by residents and built upon the theme of neighbors helping neighbors.



The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Jacksonport Town Hall, takes a right on Wisconsin 57 to Mike’s Port Pub where it turns around and heads back to JJ’s of Jacksonport.
